PROJECT DETAILS

The “Sociogenesis” Monograph continues the discussion that Devin Marty began in his first book, “The Decision-Making Employee, how to succeed in a decentralized organization.”

The core values expressed in this body of work derive from the social and economic philosophies of Fredrick Hayek, whose seminal work, “The Use of Knowledge in Society,” outlines a means for returning to a decentralized, equality-driven existence – using the prevailing central-capital structures.

According to Hayek, efficiency is the result of informed decision-making. Why do we leave the decision-making privilege to a select few at the top? They have no conceivable capacity for capturing all the knowledge in a community or organization. A decentralized decision-making unit is far more reactive and informed when compared to a top-down model. Further, the decision-makers in a decentralized network are more empowered by the mobility and autonomy that comes with being a decision-maker.

This monograph contains both photographic and written components.

PURPOSE & INSIGHT

Every image in this body of work serves explores our social order, and how humanity has gone from equality-driven egalitarian communities to hierarchy-centric systemic organization.

At its core, this work examines how these two forms of organization can function synergistically, and it suggests the inherent desirability of harmonious existence, albeit one propped up by the structures of order: a modern egalitarian experience.

To use the cover image as an example, we can see a collision of nature and structure – while the flowers are clearly the most beautiful component of this image, the stairs (commonly a metaphor for hierarchy) are essential in observing the flowerbed's appeal; thus, the two work in synergy to create a new realization for the viewer, and a path with a clear destination.

This photographic series first compares our original egalitarian existence (termed our “decentralized diagnostic”) to nature, harmony, and natural processes; and subsequently comparing our current systemic order (termed the “centralized command”) to the artificial structures that lead to order in nature or a natural process. I believe the decentralized diagnostic to be the decisive path for humanity; however, much like the prerequisite capital mode of production and mobility required to evolve and sustain a communist society (according to Marx), the centralized command has paved the way for innovations that develop and maintain a long-term communal existence. That is not to say that centralized command is without its benefit; paradoxically, because of it, humanity is now able to view our decentralized diagnostic from a new vantage point, one from which we recognize the fair and harmonious existence that we gave up.

“Modern industry has established the world market, for which the discovery of America paved the way. This market has given an immense development to commerce, to navigation, to communication by land. This development has, in its turn, reacted on the extension of industry; and in proportion as industry, commerce, navigation, railways extended, in the same proportion the bourgeoisie developed, increased its capital, and pushed into the background every class handed down from the Middle Ages.

“We see, therefore, how the modern bourgeoisie is itself the product of a long course of development, of a series of revolutions in the modes of production and of exchange.”
